Madama Butterfly
Madama Butterfly was a very interesting animation, and I haven't seen something like this before. It was a little bit harder to follow because there were no words and we had to realize what was going on from the different scenes. We are able to follow what happens by their actions, emotions, and even colors. Like I said before I haven't seen something like this before and it was a little strange for me to watch. I don't really have the creative mindset to fully understand what was exactly happening in the video. I'll explain later in the blog post but it did take me a while to fully understand the ending. I just had to use the actions and emotions of the characters to realize what had happened.
From the start of the video, we could tell that something bad may happen to her in the future because of the dark/black background that was happening in the beginning. Another thing I noticed with color is that when a good thing was happening to her in her life there would be bright and happy colors. But when she was upset or nervous we were able to see how everything would go dark. For example, when she was with the sailor everything was bright and happy, and so was she. As soon as he left for sea everything in the context went dark when she was all alone. When she realized she was pregnant and was having a child it went back to brightness in her life.
Something that I did enjoy in the video were the metaphors. The metaphors in this animation made it a deeper thought with everything and I liked the way they portrayed it. The main metaphor of the video had to do with the butterfly. I think the butterfly symbolized happiness in her life. When the butterfly was there everything was okay, but as soon as her man left for sea so did the butterfly. It was like her happiness had been taken away from her. Another metaphor that occurred was when she and her daughter were attached by the umbilical cord. This symbolized how close they were to each other and that she always had her. Once her man came back from sea and disconnected her from her daughter it showed how painful that must have been for her. It made her feel like something was breaking away from her life.
Like I said at the beginning of the blog post I would explain how the ending was a little confusing for me. So at the end of the video she see's that he's returned back home and that's all she was waiting for. She probably thought about him every day while he probably never thought about her once. Like I just explained in the last paragraph he takes away their daughter from her and moves on with his new wife and new family. Once she had nothing in her life anymore the animation took a very dark turn and I wasn't sure if she was dying or not. After watching that scene a few times I realized that the animation is how she felt once everything was taken away from. She was devasted and was experiencing so much heartbreak that she wanted to take away all the pain, and rip her insides out and slowly cripple away. She was just tearing away every little piece left of her, and she relaized that since she had nothing anymore she felt like nothing.
